Workshop on Creating and Maintaining Energy Islands - CMEI 2024

2 - 4 May, 2024 - Angers, France

In conjunction with the 13th International Conference on Smart Cities and Green ICT Systems - SMARTGREENS 2024

CO-CHAIRS

Sonja Klingert
University of Stuttgart
Germany

Brief Bio
Dr. Sonja Klingert [female] has been with the University of Stuttgart since 2022 as a senior researcher leading the working group on energy systems at the chair of distributed systems. She is part of the leading personnel of EU H2020 projects RENergetic and DECIDE. Prior to that she was a researcher and project manager EU FP7 research projects FIT4Green, All4Green, and DC4Cities as well as the H2020 projects ELECTRIFIC. Before joining University of Mannheim, she was coordinator of the EU FP6 project GridEcon at the International University in Germany. Prior to this, she worked as a researcher for the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, Germany. Her interests lie in demand response and corresponding metrics, in green business models, eco-aware contracts and energy communities as well as impact analysis. She has excellent experience in leading transdisciplinary working groups. Regarding roles in the scientific community, among others, she was chair of the international workshop series Energy Efficient Data Centres (E2DC) (2012-2016) and was part of the organization team of the international conference ACM e-Energy (2015-2016, 2021-2022). S. Klingert has a PhD in business economics from the University of Mannheim.
Sampath Mukherjee

In this role, he has designed and implemented multiple data pipelines and end-to-end data architectures for diverse clients and projects, utilizing machine learning, AI, and neural network solutions. Sampath is also a certified Scrum Master and has effectively managed teams, overseeing the delivery of scalable demos using Microsoft 365 and Azure IoT for Smart Water and Smart Energy applications. He holds a PhD in (Computational) Astrophysics from the University of Groningen, NL, focusing his research on galaxy formation and gravitational lensing. Sampath has published several papers in high impact factor scientific journals and has actively contributed to EU-funded projects, collaborating with partners across Europe. During his postdoctoral tenure at the University of Liege, he informally co-supervised two PhD students, demonstrating his dedication to mentorship and academic leadership. In addition to his academic pursuits, Sampath is an experienced public speaker, delivering talks at conferences and colloquiums.
Matthias Strobbe
Gent University
Belgium

Brief Bio
Matthias Strobbe received the master degree and Ph.D. in Computer Science Engineering from Ghent University, in July 2004 and June 2011 respectively. He is affiliated with research group IDLab, a core research group of imec with research activities embedded in Ghent University (Belgium). He currently works as business developer and research project coordinator in the domains of smart energy applications and smart buildings. He is responsible for imec's living labs HomeLab and OfficeLab, has worked on over 30 national and international research projects and is author or co-author of more than 35 papers published in international journals and conference proceedings.

SCOPE

Creating so-called “urban energy islands” is based on the rationale that if every community generates the energy it needs locally and sustainably, the global issue of climate change can partially be solved locally.  Consequently, an urban energy island is a geographically delineated district that aims at achieving a high level of energy self-sufficiency while offering energy services to external grids when needed.

In a trans-disciplinary approach, the EU Horizon 2020 research project RENergetic tackles this task by optimizing the generation and composition of energy supply across the energy sectors electricity (including electric vehicles) and heat, and distributing it efficiently. On top of this, energy demand is adapted to available local supply as much as possible, building on the acceptance or even the active support of the inhabitants of the energy island.

As the project lifetime is in its last term, the outcome should be presented to a wider public and discussed with experts working in related areas.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
  • Multi-sector Optimization Algorithms
  • Demand Side Management Frameworks
  • Heat Demand Response
  • EV Demand Response
  • Local Waste Heat Simulation and Optimization
